Cebu is one of the Philippines favorite tourist destinations with a wealth of exiting and interesting activities available for all travelers.
At the heart of the island is Cebu City, the oldest City in the country and known as the Queen City of the South. With a rich historical legacy going back to the early 16th Century and a continuing placement as the area’s trade and commerce capital Cebu is a fascinating place to explore and appreciate.
The City Tour starts with a visit to the majestic Taoist Temple. The temple is built on a high elevation that affords wonderful scenic views across Cebu. Built by Cebu’s substantial Chinese community the ornate temple has several towers and tiers accessed by winding routes.
We then head back into the City passing by Colon Street, reputedly the Philippine’s oldest street and see Carbon Market a lively home to hundreds of fresh produce and flower vendors. Next stop is at Basilica Minore del Santo Nino, where the miraculous image of the Holy Infant Jesus was found unscathed after a fire raged Cebu to the ground.
A short walk away is Magellan’s Cross, reputed to have been erected by Ferdinand Magellan it is now housed in a Chapel and is one of the Philippines main symbols of Christianity.
Close by, and near the harbor area, is Fort San Pedro, the first military stronghold in the country and the oldest fort. Recently renovated and with a garden is laid out in the inner courtyard this is a peaceful location and a tranquil stop on your journey. It also allows for a glimpse into the Philippines colonial past and life under Spanish rule.
Finally, we travel to the Parian district of the City, traditionally a base for the Chinese community is was also the residential home of Cebu’s wealthy at the turn of the 19th and 20th century. Of the remaining four heritage houses, the Gorordo Residence has been restored and furnished in the style of the period and provides an interesting insight into the past.
